Claude Skills
Claude skills are instruction packages that teach an agent a repeatable way to do a job. This index lists all 118 skills we have reviewed for Claude Code and claude.ai — each with a one-command install, a concrete use case, and maintenance status checked against the upstream repo.

Literature search, web crawling, and source-grounded synthesis with citations.

Long-form writing, document generation, prompt authoring, and publishing.
Security
Skill auditing, vulnerability scanning, and defensive review of agent instructions.
What a Claude skill actually is
A Claude skill is a folder containing a SKILL.md file — a name, a description the agent reads to decide when the skill applies, and step-by-step instructions it follows, plus optional scripts and reference files. Skills load progressively: the agent reads only the description until a matching task appears, then loads the full body. That is why you can install dozens without filling your context window.
The same SKILL.md format is read by Claude Code, claude.ai, Codex, and a growing list of runtimes — so a skill you install once usually works across the tools you already use.
How we review skills
Five checks before a skill is listed, and again as upstream repos change:
1. One-command install
The install command is verified against the repo — if it can't be installed cleanly, it isn't listed.
2. Real usage
Beyond stars: answered issues, shipped releases, references from other projects.
3. A concrete job
Listed skills do something specific. Vague assistant personas don't qualify.
4. Maintained
Recent upstream activity matters — stale skills get flagged, then removed.
5. Security reviewed
Skills are executable instructions; we flag anything that reaches the filesystem or network beyond what the description admits.
Before installing an unfamiliar repo, run it through a skill scanner.
How to install a skill
Two ways cover nearly every skill in this index. The manual path: copy the skill's folder into ~/.claude/skills/ for a user-level install, or into .claude/skills/ inside a project for project-only scope, then restart your agent session. The faster path is the skills CLI — it does the same copy with one command and works across Claude Code, Codex, and most runtimes that read SKILL.md.
Whichever path you use, the agent discovers the skill automatically on the next session — no config file edits needed.

- A folder of instructions — a SKILL.md file plus optional scripts and references — that an agent loads when a task calls for it. It teaches Claude Code or claude.ai a repeatable way to do one specific job.

- Yes — everything listed is a publicly available open-source repository. SkillMap reviews and indexes them; we don't charge for listings or take payment for placement.
- How do I install a Claude skill?
- Copy the skill folder into ~/.claude/skills/ (user-level) or .claude/skills/ (project-level), or run `npx skills add owner/repo`. Restart your agent session so it discovers the new SKILL.md.
- Do these skills work with Claude Code and claude.ai?
- Both read the same SKILL.md format and most skills run in either. Differences are at the edges: Claude Code adds hooks and plugin marketplaces, while claude.ai manages skills through its own interface — check each repo's stated runtime.
